PCP Smoking Driver Who Killed Oren Dorrell on H Street Sentenced
On Friday a judge sentenced the driver who struck and killed 53 year old reporter Oren Dorrell on H Street NE on June 8, 2018. In accordance with a plea deal to voluntary manslaughter, 47 year old Daryl Grant Alexander was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Alexander, who admitted that he had consumed alcohol and smoked PCP prior to hitting Mr. Dorrell, was apparently heavily intoxicated and not coherent when police removed him from his car. He originally struck Dorrell in the 1100 block of H Street NE, and Dorrell was still under the car when witnesses stopped Alexander at 13th and H Street NE. Bystanders assisted police (reportedly about twenty people total) in lifting the car off the injured Dorrell, who later died from his injuries. Dorrell, who was wearing a helmet as he rode his motorcycle, had been stopped at a light when Alexander hit him from behind. Because Alexander told investigators that he had no memory of hitting a motorcyclist, or driving that stretch of road, he was allowed to enter an Alford plea. The Washington Post points out Alexander was on probation for a DUI at the time of collision, and USA Today notes that Alexander actually had five prior DUI arrests.
I gleaned the above information from The Washington Post and USA Today, which both have stories on the sentencing. Dorrell was a foreign affair reporter for USA Today. He lived with his family in the Trinidad neighborhood.

A Chinese Washing Machine Company Liked Local Firm Design Army's Work So Much They Stole It
Unbelievable rip-off of @DesignArmy's Hong Kong Ballet print ads by China-based washing machine brand Little Swan. https://t.co/2hbSg1XcWB pic.twitter.com/afjad2o01k— Tim Nudd (@nudd) February 5, 2019
Adweek has an interesting story on a local business that can sometimes fly under the radar because it's not a restaurant, bar, store, or performance space. Design firm Design Army (510 H St. NE, Suite 200) has called H Street home for years, and you have definitely seen their work even if you didn't recognize it (check out their Instagram @DesignArmy). The firm came up with an amazing campaign for Hong Kong Ballet, and then a Chinese washing machine company known as Little Swan pretty blatantly ripped it off. If you aren't a subscriber to Adweek you can sign up for a free account. You can also read more about the situation and see the images over at Campaign Brief Asia, which posted a story before Adweek, and also covered the Design Army campaign back in May of 2018 when it was first released.

Star & Shamrock to Close After a Nearly Decade on H Street NE
The Star & Shamrock (1341 H St. NE) announced yesterday that they will close their doors in mid-February, after nearly a decade on H Street NE, to "focus to new opportunities and projects." Bullfrog Bagels will take over the space. The venerable Jewish deli/Irish bar opened in April of 2010. Bullfrog Bagels opened up a counter inside Star & Shamrock on Sept. 19, 2014. The tavern's final weekend will be Feb. 15–17. Stop by to bid them farewell before it's too late.
The following announcement was posted to their Facebook page:
It is bittersweet for us to announce that after 10 years on H St, the Star & Shamrock will be closing. We are excited to shift our focus to new opportunities and projects. It has been our pleasure to play a part in the continued reimagining of this storied neighborhood. None of this would have been possible without the love and support of our friends & family, the hard work & dedication of our staff members over the years and the loyalty of our customers. We look forward to passing the torch ( & space) to our long time collaborators and roommates at Bullfrog Bagels. Please stop by before our farewell weekend February 15-17

Two Scientists Walk into a Bar Near You on Feb. 7
Scientists ready to answer your questions. Photo from the event announcement.
Do you have a thirst for knowledge? Perhaps you have burning science questions? LabX is here to help with their program Two Scientists Walk into a Bar. It may sound like the beginning of a joke, but it's really just an invitation to good conversation in a local bar. On Thursday, Feb. 7 local scientists will descend upon eleven area drinking establishments to talk science. Each spot will have a set focus. The scientists will be easy to spot, just look for the sign that reads “We are scientists. Ask us anything!”
Two of the bars are right here in our neck of the woods. Drop by Pie Shop (2nd floor of Dangerously Delicious Pies, 1339 H St. NE) to talk about plant science/food safety. Head over to Cotton and Reed (1330 Fifth St. NE) to discuss environmental science/influenza/infectious disease. You don't have to register or snag a ticket. Just drop by, get a drink, and ask a scientist.

Photos of the Soon to Open Red Bear Brewing Co.
Twitter user @CapitolHillPhil was kind enough to share a few photos from a recent tour of NoMa's Red Bear Brewing Co. (209 M St NE), which could open as soon as mid-February. The brewery and tap room are getting a some serious decoration, including the "Raptor Room," an all gender (and family friendly) Jeff Goldbloom themed restroom. The Red Bear team have been sharing plenty of photos on their Twitter feed (@RedBearBrewing). Sneak a peek at their 75 foot concrete bar top, and their signs. I also really love this shot from ANC Commissioner Rob Dooling (ANC 6C06) of funky bathroom art.
