Weekend Fundraiser at the Pug
Here's the info:
hey,
we're heading into the cool days of summer and i hope everyone's plans for the summer season include several trips to the pug. if you're looking for an excuse to visit soon, we are doing another fundraiser this weekend. we had been considering raising money for sarah palin's empress of the americas campaign, but on further review we found a much better cause. jason cage is a firefighter i've known since my days at the lounge who's been battling cystic fibrosis. he's recently gotten a lung transplant and the financial strain is pretty large so we are donating 10 per cent of this weekend's ring to try to help out a little bit. for more info you can check out second wind for jason cage on the interweb, or stop by for a pint and a shot.
as always, thanks for your continued support,
tonyt

Why You Shouldn't Dump Outside Thrift Stores
This is a topic I've written about multiple times, but I wanted to share this piece on exactly what happens when people "donate" items to the Salvation Army on H Street after hours. This story from the Revelstoke Current isn't local, but it covers the same issues. I speak from experience, having logged many hours volunteering as a sorter for various charities. I will say that I suspect some of the tvs do find buyers, but I've seen ancient computers with the hard drives removed, and pieces of furniture. If you illegally dump after hours (and that is what happens) people rip open and pick through the bags of stuff. It gets strewn about, and possibly rained upon. It looks trashy, and brings down the look of the whole 1300 block of H Street.

Intersections Call For Performers
The Atlas Performing Arts Center announces its third annual all-arts festival celebrating the artistic and cultural connections of our community and world. Through innovative intersections of theater, dance, music, film and video, opera, visual art and spoken word, we will bring together diverse artists and audiences from DC and beyond to break boundaries and create connections in our intimate performance spaces, festive lobby and café. The festival features productions and events that give distinctive voice to the kaleidoscope of perspectives of the “new America” – a place of intersecting cultures, races, ages and art forms and stretch the boundaries of art through collaborations across genres, disciplines, ages, perspectives and experiences. More information and a downloadable proposal form can be found at www.intersectionsdc.org. The deadline for submission is June 17, 2011. Questions: Contact Festival Artistic Director, Mary Hall Surface, at intersectionsdc@atlasarts.org. The Atlas is located at 1333 H Street.

Open Studio DC
Saturday night I stopped by the gallery openings (Conner, G Fine Art, Industry Gallery) in the 1300 block of Florida Avenue (immediately north of H Street). Aside from a lively evening of looking at art, sipping wine, and people watching, my friends and I also enjoyed our first look at Open Studio DC (1348 Florida Avenue). Open Studio DC is a screenprinting studio for artists. Artists can work in the space for a predetermined period of time, or until they complete a certain work. It's an interesting addition to the block, and occupies the corner space which has been vacant since the departure of Nifty Thrift.

Looking Back at 2000
Because we've been hitting up a lot of history recently, what with the WAMU piece and Richard Layman's response to it, and the Fuller murder (1984) coverage, I thought it might make sense to look at a snap shot of H Street in 2000. Here you go, courtesy of the City Paper.
DC Brau's Penn Quarter Porter on H
DC Brau has released 27 kegs of it's new Penn Quarter Porter. A brewery representative described the brew as "on the line between a porter and a stout" with hints of chocolate. The Going Out Gurus have the full scoop on where to get your fix. You'll find four H Street spots on that list:
The Argonaut
Smith Commons
The Pug
Little Miss Whiskey's
DC Brau has advised people to call the bars before heading over because though they will all have kegs, not everyone will tap them tonight.
WTOP: Ghosts Of the Catherine Fuller Murder
It was a notorious case, perhaps DC's version of the Central Park Jogger attack. A woman brutally raped and murdered in an alley at 8th and H Street by a gang of youths. The motive? The $50 cash she carried, and assorted jewelery and personal items. It happened in 1984. Twelve defendants went to trial, resulting in eight convictions (two others plead guilty). One died behind bars. Now the convicted parties are in court with new witness evidence that did not out at the first trial. They are seeking either a vacated conviction, or a new trial.
The original accounts of the attack are quite lurid. Some said that as many as 25-30 people gathered around and witnessed the attack with none intervening, and many participating. Mrs. Fuller (who weighed 99 pounds, and stood 5 feet tall) was beaten savagely, sustaining multiple kicks and punches. Someone violently inserted a foot long pole (or pipe) into her rectum hard enough to rip through her intestines and liver, but the official cause of death was blunt force trauma (Crime Classification Manual). At least one of the convicted apologized to the family. Admissions also happened in the Central Park Jogger case, in which all original defendants were years later exonerated when it became clear that she had actually been attacked not by a group of boys, but rather by a serial rapist who had actually put out the eyes of one of his victims. A case to watch for sure, but it's highly relevent here because the incident cemented in the minds of people the idea of H Street (and DC in general) as a dangerous and lawless place where hoods ran rampant, and anything might happen to anyone.

Have you wondered about the weekly Street Talk meetings at Sova? The purpose of these meetings is to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, and landlords with an eye toward bringing retail, and related businesses, to H Street. What types of businesses have come up so far? A co-op bakery, bike repair and sales, a funky custom clothing boutique, a skateboard shop/skate park, and much more. There are opportunities (I still need to get more details on this part) for financial help for eligible businesses. Two types of businesses that are I'm told are not eligible for the (gov) financial assistance: cell phone stores amd salons / barbershops.
