A Very Detailed Toki Underground Review

Black Ops Gourmet gives Toki Underground pretty much the biggest thumbs up possible. From the intro:

I am a huge fan of Toki Underground. Embarrassingly so. This will be one of those insane gushing reviews that doesn't really fit with my cynical, picky, judgmental, difficult to please foodie side. I am completely ok with this as few restaurants have earned my unabashed adoration.

Streetcars are running late, but construction is almost complete

No big shock here, but the streetcars are delayed. Basically they are getting pushed back a little more than a year to fall of 2013. I  think most people have expected this news for a while. Just hang in there, at least the construction is mostly gone. Full coverage from WTOP.

A six year old photo of H Street looking particularly trashy on a Saturday morning

We Love DC pointed me to a Travel and Leisure list that named DC America's 15th dirtiest city. Thankfully the mention also pointed out the new legislation that provides for pedestrians to be fined up to $75 for littering. Will it help? I think so, but it's entirely dependent upon enforcement. Obviously, H Street doesn't usually look like the 2005 photo above (I really think someone had dumped a couple of trash bags out on the street), I did recently see a block of Bladensburg Road that looked just as bad. If you want to read the original 2005 post, you can do so here.

Sign the Petition to Help Retail on H

OVERVIEW

H Street NE Retail Priority Area Incentive Act of 2010

WHAT IS IT?

This legislation passed unanimously by Council -- chaired by Mr. Gray -- in December 2010.

The law requires that the tax increment already collected from the H Street NE corridor be reinvested in two ways: 1) a new grant program to retain and recruit retail small businesses on the corridor, tied to new job creation, and 2) fund a previously approved, but unfunded, tax abatement for the project at 3rd and H Street, NE.

Looking Back at Looking Forward

For some reason DDOT uploaded a copy of the Great Streets Framework Plan: H Street NE -Benning Road to Scribd today. This document dates to maybe 2005. But it's actually kind of cool to look back at it right now as we reach substantial completion of the streetscape project.

Unleashed Dog Attack at 7th & I Yesterday

The Battered Leash by whyamiKeenan
The Battered Leash, a photo by whyamiKeenan on Flickr.
I received the following email about a dog attacked by another dog yesterday. The attacked dog is lucky to be alive. The unleashed, but accompanied, dog was a light brown pit. It, and its owner, ran off after the attack. The woman who was walking her retriever also had her nine month old child with her, so this could have had a much worse ending. She and her husband are seeking help from anyone who might have witnessed the attack and can identify the dog. Apparently several people saw it and some attempted to give aid. This story illustrates why it's so important to keep your dog on lease while walking him/her. Read the full story after the jump.

Toki Underground snags even more great press. In this one from Bag and Baguette the author writes that "toki's is food -revelation-good good. really." High praise indeed. Bright Sparks Everyday also sounds like they'll be making the return trip. Two DC joins the party proclaiming that, "[a]t the risk of sounding pretentious, [they]'ve literally traveled the world sampling great noodle soup, and in [their] experience, Toki Underground is about as good as it gets." Comm Hooper Steps Down as Vice Chair of ANC 5B

It was reported last night by @9NewsDelia that Commissioner David Hooper of ANC 5B had resigned. I recently got clarification that Hooper has not resigned his ANC position, but has merely stepped down as Vice Chair. The current Chair of ANC 5B, William Shelton, is under investigation for misappropriating $27,000 in public ANC funds. If Shelton had stepped down Hooper would have been first in line to replace him. It appears Hooper didn't quite want to do that due to his "busy and demanding schedule."

Scandal Rocks ANC 5B

Last week brought revelations that ANC 5B Chair William Shelton is under investigation for misappropriating $27,000 in public ANC funds. Here's some of the coverage from WUSA9, and Loose Lips. Explanations were promised, but I have heard any. Now comes news that ANC 5B Vice Chair David Hooper (widely expected to replace embattled Chair William Shelton should he resign) has himself resigned. Twitter user @9NewsDelia (WUSA9 reporter Delia Gonรงales) broke the story last night just after 10pm. According to Gonรงales Hooper reportedly claimed that he was resigning due to his "busy and demanding schedule." [*Editor's note: it is unclear whether Hooper resigned from his ANC seat, or merely from his position as Vice Chair. As Vice Chair he would have been expected to take over in the event that Shelton resigns, and that would mean a lot more duties and responsibilities falling on Hooper's shoulders*] Wow, what's next? And is the $27,000 really all that's missing?

Roll Call: Seeing the Signs on H Street

Roll Call has a very interesting story on efforts by local bars and restaurants to better accommodate deaf patrons by learning a little ASL. If you've ever spent any significant time in the area you will know that we have a sizable deaf population, partly do to the proximity of Gallaudet University. All those students, professors, and university employees frequent the bars and restaurants on H Street. Now with $25,000 in grants from the District government CHAMPS and HSMS are partnering to provide free ASL classes to owners and employees of bars, restaurants, and other local businesses. The ten session classes will focus on vocabulary relevant to the service industry, and will also include education on deaf culture and history.

Homicide in the 1300 Block of Levis

A man in his sixties was found stabbed Sunday evening when police responded to a call of trouble at a rowhouse in the 1300 block of Levis. Reports indicate that there was duct tape affixed to the man's head. This is in the Trinidad neighborhood.

Full coverage:
Washington Post, Homicide Watch DC, WJLA, NBC4.

UPDATE
++++++++++++++++

More info from NBC4: the victim was 61 years old and lived in the basement of the residence. Apparently the rowhouse had been chopped up into separate living spaces (around four people lived in the house), so this sounds to me like a rooming house situation. Police have not released the cause of death (stabbing?), and would not say whether it appeared to be a home invasion situation. My guess would be not.

ABC7: The victim's name is Glenn Scarborough. Neighbors described him as quiet.

Coming Soon: The Big Board

Here's a little info on the Big Board, which replaces Toyland at 421 H Street. It's a gourmet burger and salad spot. Initially they will open with the Toyland hours (so, evenings only), but expect lunch in early fall. The dinner opening is planned for early August. The will retain the full license, so they will continue to serve cocktails. Also expect four beers on tap, and a decent bottled beer selection. Brunch in the future, but only after they have the other stuff down pat. Four partners, two live right off H Street. The partners are three brothers, and one childhood friend. Three are current or former military, and one is a high school teacher.

++++++++++++++++
UPDATE
++++++++++++++++

A little clarification from the owner of the pricing plan (which came up in the comments):
The Big Board is slangy way to refer to the stock market and we are going try something a little different as it relates to beer prices. The difference is that the prices will only go down from their set menu price and will be based on what people are ordering. We have never planned on that extending to the kitchen. We see it as fun way to get customers involved and have them decided what our specials are based on what they are ordering. As with Wall Street, there is always the risk of a "market crash" where the original prices will reset. ;)

We don't have much additional information beyond what you've read here and elsewhere. We are 100% committed to making sure that we become a successful restaurant that supports the community.

As some of you may have noticed, we are also working through some technical issues (including learning how to spell / use spellcheck) but hope to have our Website and Facebook page up soon. Although, this might take a little longer than expected since after reading a few of the posts here, we are no longer sure whether or not we are qualified to write our own copy.

Hope to see you out on H Street and that you'll give us a chance to earn your business when we do open our doors!

WCP: Taser Troubles at Layla Lounge

The City Paper runs a story on a patron suing  Layla Lounge (501 Morse Street) for allegedly tasing/shocking (possibly with a stun gun) her three times. Leah Davis, who stands 4'11", says a 6'3" bouncer shocked her three times in the neck without good cause.  She's now complaining to ABRA and filing papers in court. Non-police are prohibited from possessing either stun guns, or tasers in the District. The club maintains that their security guards did not have either.  Davis' suit seeks $1 million. Reportedly there may be a cell phone video of the incident out there somewhere.

I'm waiting for a call back from the new owner, and will draft a post when I learn more.

Ain't Misbehavin' at the Atlas

1930’s Harlem is immortalized in Fats Waller’s lively, funny, toe-tapping, finger-snapping revue—one of Broadway’s finest.

The outrageously prodigious comic and musical soul of 1930s Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, finger-snapping revue that is still considered one of Broadway's best. The inimitable Thomas "Fats" Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lenox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and that jumpin' new beat, Swing. Although not quite a biography, "Ain't Misbehavin'" evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Each Wednesday, stop by SOVA anytime between 11am and 1pm for Street Talk - informal salon discussions of how we, as H Street business owners and stakeholders, envision the future of H Street, NE economic development. Street Talk is being initiated by H Street entrepreneur Joe Englert with support from CHAMPS – Capitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce.

Lost Dog: Lulu

photo

All our tiny dog lulu seems to have gotten out. She must have gotten out sometime today because there were guys in and out doing work on our house at 11th and G NE.
She's a tiny (1 yr old and six pounds), white/tan mix of toy poodle and Italian greyhound so she's cute and very very fast.

If you see her please let me know. Thanks!

Gold Cup Games & Cheap Beer at the Pug

The Pug, originally uploaded by AWard Tour.

From Tony T.:

hey,
well another international tournament is starting and no doubt, the US will
leave me heartbroken again. the gold cup is not quite as compelling as the
world cup, but the us-guadalupe match could be fun. in order to vaguely
recreate that dramatic world cup atmosphere, we're going to make it easy to
drink. for all the us games, bud tall boys are going to be $2, miller lite drafts
$3, and to keep you balanced, $1 hotdogs. tomorrow night, the us are playing
canada, so in the spirit of good relations with our funny neighbors to the north
we are going to be dumping off $3 molson and labbats. We will not be serving
cheap canadian bacon.
i know we don't need to drink to have a good time, however it's important to
note that a portion of bud sales in the crazy, patriotic inspired cans is donated
to us veterans, so we'll be drinking for those who serve. (for more info look up
here's to heroes, folds of honor.)
as always, thanks for your support,
go USA,
tonyt
