Last Night Was Violent...Really Violent
We begin our tale in the 1600 block of Trinidad Ave where police shot and killed a man who lunged at officers with a knife following a domestic dispute [or read the Post version]. This was between 9 and 10pm. Then we head over to the 1200 block of Florida Avenue where the drunk driver of a very large tow-truck hits 2 cars before taking out a wrought iron treebox installed earlier that day and finally coming to rest in front of a church. One of the cars contained a woman and her young daughter. A passenger jumped out of the tow-truck and ran off, knocking roughly 20 empty beer cans to the ground as he exited the vehicle.
Our next stop is the 1100 block of Holbrook Street where a triple shooting occurred around 4am. Two news channels say Holbrook Street, but the listserv says Holbrook Terrace, so take your pick, but Channel 4 describes the location as close to Florida Ave, and Holbrook Terrace is not that. All three shooting victims were male and all are now dead. One was in an SUV, and the other two were outside of the SUV.

WP: Deaf Residents Targeted For B&E?
The Post has a story on a series of break-ins near Gallaudet University that has some wondering if deaf residents are being specifically targeted by thieves. I'll mention that my roommate had to call the police yesterday after he witnessed a middle age crackhead looking guy rob an older deaf woman of her watch and wallet on Florida Ave. Home invasions are very scary, particularly when the residents are home. I have some hearing friends who slept through a burglary in their house on the Hill a fews years back and they were very shaken to know someone had been in their home while they were sleeping. I can only imagine how dangerous it might be if the residents weren't sleeping but merely didn't hear the intruder and accidentally surprised him.

5D CAC Meeting Summary

The Fifth District Citizens' Advisory Council held a meeting on Thursday, May 22 at the MPD Fifth District Headquarters. Some of the highlights:
* Overall crime is down 10% in 5D
* Burglaries are up 12%. These are happening primarily during the day with entry through rear windows
* Be sure to call 911 to report all suspicious people and activities
Nick Majett spoke on pursuing violations of "Section 8" Federal Housing Regulations. His main points:
* All Section 8 property owners must obtain a business license from DCRA
* All Section 8 property owners must obtain a certificate of occupancy
* DC Housing Authority must inspect all Section 8 properties
Violations:
* You cannot allow someone else other than the designated tenant to live in a section 8 home. Call Diane Oliver at DCHA to report violations; 202-535-1307

* Contact DCRA at http://www.dcra.dc.gov/, DCRA@DC.GOV, or 202/442-4400 for overgrown grass and weeds. Owners will be given 7 days to abate after receiving notice. DCRA will then abate and place lien on property.

Singles Meeting Recap
Resident Stan Harris has put together a convenient recap of last night's Ward 5 roundtable on a possible singles ban--
Council member Harry Thomas, Jr. called a meeting on 5/27 at the Isle of Patmos Church to discuss single sales of alcoholic beverages. The meeting included Ward 5 residents and business owners affected by the subject. Most residents were for some sort of moratorium on the sale of singles. The business owners (liquor and grocery stores) were against it.
Residents cited the following problems:
* No receipts furnished for single sale purchases
* Lack of respect by business owners for the surrounding community
* No taxes collected on single sale items
* Businesses are employing illegal aliens
* Business owners do not speak English
* Business owners don't contribute to community events and fundraisers
* Voluntary agreements are not being honored
* Loitering and litter produced by single sale customers
Businesses cited the following:
* There are already laws in place that allow for moratoriums like voluntary agreements
* Communities can protest against the business owners license renewal if there are problems
* Consumer choice is limited by single sale bans. For example, no expensive craft beers can be sold as singles
* Problem businesses should be targeted instead of imposing a ward-wide ban.
Harry's next steps:
* All existing voluntary sales agreements are to be reviewed
* Problem stores are to be identified

Legislation has been introduced for Wards 4, 7, and 8 to prohibit the sale of an individual container of the package if the capacity of the individual container is 70 ounces or less, as well as prohibit the division of manufacturer’s package of more than one container of beer, malt, liquor, or ale. The meeting will be held at the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church, 12th Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NE. Time: starting at 9am bring your plants for sorting -- swap starts
promptly at 10am -- do not be late - if you arrive after 10am,
sorry, you will not be able to participate due to the structure of
this event - we will conclude well before 12noon
Place: H Street Farmers Market at H & 8th -- 624 H Street NE near
Union Station on Saturdays 9am-12n
Who: anyone on the DCUrbanGardeners list is welcome as are any of
your friends, relatives, or neighbors
Bring:
~ a name tag - home made or from work or school -- whatever works --
so that we know your name and we can all connect our emails, names
and faces.
~ plants to swap - pot them up NOW -- the longer they can get
settled in their pots, the better their chance of success and
survival - (no plants to share? see note below)
~ labels - fully label all your swap plants with as much info as you
have - optimally that will include: common and scientific name,
amount of sun needed, amount of water needed, any other special care
notes, and color of the blooms - if not currently in flower
How: be prepared to BRIEFLY introduce yourself and describe your

Atlas Seeks Volunteer Ushers
Announcement--
The Atlas Performing Arts Center, located at 1333 H Street, NE, is seeking friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to usher for our upcoming performances. Volunteer ushers are asked to arrive at our center one hour prior to the performance, dressed in black and white, to assist our House Manager in tasks such as greeting and directing patrons, taking tickets, passing out programs, seating patrons before and during the performance, and clearing the theatre of trash for up to 15 minutes following the performance. We even reward a job well done with complimentary tickets to a performance of your choice!
Volunteering at the Atlas is a great way to become involved in the excited world of performing arts! We feature a variety of shows, ranging from drama and comedy to musicals and dance performances. There is no minimum or maximum amount of times you must volunteer with us. You can help for one performance or a hundred!

The husband and wife massage therapy team at Healthy Motions® Massage Therapy, www.healthymotions.com, would like to introduce ourselves and our services to our neighbors in Near Northeast and beyond. Kevin Kelly and Granetta Coleman are both graduates of Potomac Massage Training Institute (www.pmti.org) in D.C., Nationally Certified by NCBTMB ( www.ncbtmb.org ), Professional Members of the American Massage Therapy Association (www.amtamassage.org) and Licensed in D.C. by the Board of Massage Therapy of the D.C. Dept. of Health (License Nos. MT295 & MT483). Kevin and Granetta are native Washingtonians, have been residents of the Capitol Hill area for over 8 years and have been providing therapeutic massage for over six years.
Our current training is in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, and Hot Stone Massage Therapy modalities. Granetta is also certified in Pregnancy Massage Therapy and as an Educator of Infant Massage. We also offer On-site Seated Massage Therapy with optional Stress Management Seminars for employee appreciation events and health fairs in the DC area. Our goal at Healthy Motions® Massage Therapy is to provide excellent massage therapy services tailored to the specific needs of each client in a relaxing, therapeutic space. “Goldfinger” Thursday, May 22
Washington, D.C., May 21, 2008….The summer-long James Bond Film Festival, hosted by the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) in Washington, D.C.., continues this week with a free showing of “Goldfinger” on Thursday, May 22 starting at dusk.
The film will be shown outdoors at the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues, N.E. The site is located directly across Florida Avenue from the New York Avenue Metro station on the Red Line and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) headquarters. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and walk, bike, or take Metro.
On the Fly, DC’s latest craze in street vending, will have its bright green electric vehicle onsite serving great food from some of the city’s favorite local restaurants like Julia’s Empanadas, Rocklands BBQ, and more.
The James Bond Film Festival will be held each Thursday night through August 28, rain or shine, with each film showing preceded by an Odd-job and other Bond character look-alike contest. The film series will take place on the future site of MRP Realty’s Washington Gateway project, a one million square foot mixed-use project that will begin construction later this year. ABC7: Car Lot Shut Down
ABC7 reports on police and EPA operations that have shut down a Bladensburg Road used car lot for violations ranging from the pouring of motor oil down storm drains, to theft of electricity. This lot had previously been raided for various other criminal offenses and civil violations. This lot is located on Bladensburg Road [Carver Terrace side] near Mt. Olivet.

ANC 6C05 Results
Tony Richardson is the new Commissioner. Statements from both candidates follow--
I am pleased to announce the results of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission Special Election for ANC 6C05. Two candidates were fighting for the non-partisan position. Last night, I was declared the winner and will be sworn in by Councilmember Tommy Wells as the ANC Commissioner 6C05.
The Commissioner seat became available after the sitting Commissioner resigned. After a month of campaigning, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all those within the community that connected with my message; worked to get other neighbors committed to my message; and for your investment in the issues facing our community by taking the time to come out and cast your vote. The success of my campaign was due to the care you have for our community, your commitment and support to drive the improved quality of life agenda. I also wish to acknowledge Rachael Hall who ran a good campaign and I look forward to working with her.
For those outside of our community, I extend my appreciation for your support during this campaign.
I will serve out the remainder of the term until January 2009. I intend to fulfill this term and campaign for a full 2-year term for the November General Election. While the Special Election is over, I will need your continued commitment and support to win the Commissioner seat in November.

Now that warm weather has returned it's the perfect time to check out the Argonaut's Doggie Happy Hour. The event is every Saturday from 1-6pm. During this time you and your canine friend can enjoy the Argonaut's patio and take advantage of the happy hour prices that are offered to all human patrons, not just dog owners. Trinidad-Ivy City Garden Club Planting
I know this is last minute, but we're going to do a small planting this Saturday at 12:30pm. Meet at the corner of Montello and Morse. Bring gloves, shovels and trowels if you have them. This should be a relatively quick and easy planting. I also suggest that people bring a bottle of water to drink in case it gets hot. You might also want to bring a little cash in case there is a coffee run during the planting, or a field trip for Korean food after.

The H Street NE Heritage Trail Working Group will meet Tuesday, June 10, at 7 pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1331 H Street, NE) to vote on a title for the trail, among other business. This will be the last meeting before the group submits its application to the Washington, DC Neighborhood Heritage Trails Program. Current and former residents of the H Street neighborhood, and other interested parties, are encouraged to weigh in on title ideas by attending the meeting or contacting Mara Cherkasky at 202-661-7581 or mcherkasky@culturaltourismdc.org. The program is a project of Cultural Tourism DC in collaboration with the District Department of Transportation, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, U.S. Department of Transportation, and community associations and local business groups. Cultural Tourism DC initiated the program with two goals in mind: helping visitors find their way around Washington’s historic neighborhoods and promoting community pride.

We have three exciting developments in the 1300 block of H. Sweets and Treats, an ice cream and sweet shop that will occupy 1360 H Street [the middle building in the photo] has a banner up. Someone is working on the very long vacant Micky's building [the yellow one]. And the building just to the right, which was formerly a church [next to what was the Majestic], will soon boast a Latin-African fusion restaurant.

Whether you're a new ANC Commissioner learning to navigate the maze of DC government, a seasoned Commissioner with knowledge to share, or a constituent with suggestions for organizational improvement, we hope you will use this google group as a primary community resource to contribute to the political process. No ANC should function as an island. We need to think beyond the boundaries of our Single Member Districts to build cross-Commission
relationships to tackle the collective issues facing our community.

-Initiate an inter-Commission dialogue to identify issues surrounding the delivery of government programs and services.

COUNT DOWN TO STICKY RICE!!!
Over the past several months I have increasingly been asked if I had any news on Sticky Rice's projected opening date. In fact, I was asked this question twice today during the roughly 20 minutes I spent at the farmers market. What made today different is that I could say I did have some information. The good folks behind Sticky Rice have not only been working hard to get everything right, they've also been kind enough to send in some photos and details. Fox5: J & V Pawn Raided
Fox 5 News reports on a raid at J &V Pawn. Police arrested the owner and an employee for knowingly receiving and trafficking in stolen goods. Inventory was cataloged and checked against a computerized database with the aim of identifying which goods are stolen and returning them to their rightful owners. The shop is located at 703 H Street.

Artomatic Opens Today
You may already know that Artomatic opens today at noon in NoMA. The art extravaganza runs from May 9th through June 15th. The hours are-

One thing you may not know about Artomatic is that it offers children's events. Check out the press releases below for more info and a full schedule of children's events-
Artomatic offers free events for kids every weekend
If you've got a budding Frida Kahlo or Pablo Picasso in your family,
Artomatic will the place for your kids to be this summer. The
five-week event will include more than a dozen free children's
activities, including hands-on workshops, tours and other arts-related
attractions. And that's in addition to the thousands of artworks that
will be on display.
Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic is the Washington, D.C., area's
one-of-a-kind multimedia arts event. More than 1,000 artists —
including about 700 visual artists and 300 performers — are
participating in this year's event. For the first time, Artomatic will
be hosting a full lineup of events designed especially for younger
artists.
Free children's activities are scheduled for every weekend of
Artomatic, which will be held May 9–June 15. The kids events kick off
Saturday May 10 with storytelling at noon and continue with drawing,
dolls, portraits, poetry and more on subsequent days. Kids will get to
express their creativity through hands-on activities such as making
their own mobiles, seed mosaics or fanciful paper hats.
"Artomatic is for everyone in the community, including children, so
we've designed a full slate of events just for them," said Fran
Atkinson, Artomatic children's activities co-chair. "Today's creative
kids are tomorrow's artists."
While at Artomatic, kids should check out the 10th floor, which is
home to more than three dozen Peeps dioramas. Artomatic is once again
hosting finalists from the Sunday Source Peeps Diorama Contest held by
The Washington Post. On Saturday, May 31, from noon to 2 p.m.,
children can take part in a tour of the Peeps dioramas and a free
Peeps diorama-making workshop. A second diorama workshop will be held
June 7. The dioramas can also be viewed anytime during regular
Artomatic hours.
Families will also want to browse the wide range of artwork on display
at Artomatic. Artomatic will include nine floors of visual artwork,
including ceramics, sculptures, installations, paintings, fiber works,
photography and murals. Artomatic is unique in that it is an inclusive
and open art event, showcasing works from a range of performers and
artists. Artomatic is an open, unjuried event. Not all artwork may not
be suited for children, so parents should use their own judgment as
they accompany their families during the event.
Parents who bring their children to Artomatic will want to pick up a
copy of the Kidsomatic Self-Tour Guide, which includes a list of
artworks that appeal to kids, as selected by Artomatic children's
events organizers. Copies of the guide will be available on the first
floor.
All Artomatic children's events are free, but space may be limited. To
RSVP and reserve a space, visit http://www.artomatic.org/kids.
Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent during kids

Presented in collaboration with the NoMa (North of Massachusetts

1200 First Street, N.E., just one block west of the New York Avenue
Metro station, in Washington, D.C.

You can also donate blood at Artomatic if you go between 12pm and 4pm this Saturday.
On May 10 from noon until 4 p.m., Artomatic will be sponsoring a blood
drive to benefit the Blood Donor Center at Children's National Medical
Center. The drive will take place on the grounds of the Capitol Plaza
I building, where this year's Artomatic will be held. Capitol Plaza I
building is located at 1200 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002
(New York Ave. Metro stop, M Street exit). Children's National Medical
Center will be bringing a bloodmobile to collect donations on-site.
"Artomatic is a community arts event, and this is one of the many ways
that we are giving back to our community," said Artomatic artist Kerri
Sheehan, who is helping coordinate the blood drive.
The Blood Donor Center team at Children's National Medical Center
collects approximately 2,800 whole blood donations and 750 platelet
donations per year. But as the number of patients treated at the
medical center continues to grow, the need for blood donations is
greater than ever. Blood and platelets are in constant demand for
victims of accidents, cancer treatments, blood diseases and many types
of surgery. Each pint donated through the drive may help three or more
patients at Children's National. While all blood centers have a
constant need, Children's National Medical Center is the only hospital
in the region dedicated exclusively to pediatrics and has specialized
needs for transfusion services for children.
On May 10, Children's National Medical Center is hoping to collect
more than 30 units of blood through the Artomatic blood drive, and
that could help save lives of up to 90 children.
Donors will be able to give blood on a walk-up basis on Saturday, but
you can make sure you are first in line by reserving a time slot. To
make a reservation, visit www.childrensnational.org/donateblood, enter
the sponsor code "art", select the Artomatic drive and reserve your
time.
And you can enter a raffle to win 200 bucks towards your favorite piece of art
Artomatic visitors looking for that perfect piece of art for their
home or office will have an extra incentive to pick out their favorite
at this year's event.
As part of an Artomatic-sponsored raffle, visitors will have a chance
to win a $200 gift certificate that can be used to purchase any art
for sale at Artomatic.
"With more than 700 visual artists showing thousands of artworks,
including paintings, photography, glass, ceramics, sculptures and
fiber works, Artomatic will be an art-lovers paradise," said Artomatic
artist Liliane Blom, who is coordinating the raffle. "The raffle will
provide an extra incentive for visitors to find an artwork that they
love and make it their own."
Raffle tickets are $5 each and will be sold during Artomatic, which
will be held May 9–June 15. Odds of winning are 1:80, with half of
raffle proceeds benefiting Artomatic. Tickets will be sold at the
Artomatic store, located on the 11th floor, and by roaming volunteers.
Raffle drawings will be held every time 80 tickets are sold, meaning
there may be multiple drawings and multiple winners. Drawings will be
held Fridays at 9 p.m. in the Artomatic store. Winners need not be
present to win. Full details on the raffle are available at the event.
"The only hard choice for the winner will be deciding which artwork to
use their $200 gift certificate on," Blom said.
Artwork on display at Artomatic cannot be removed during the course of
the event, so purchasers will need to wait until after June 15 to hang
their new art at home. Visitors wishing to purchase art should contact
the artists directly.
This year's Artomatic is hosted by the NoMa Business Improvement

WTOP: Possible Singles Ban in 4, 7, and 8
Wards, of course. They are considering singles bans. There has also been talk of expanding the ANC 6A H Street ban [which also covers some surrounding areas] into ANC 6C, as well as talk of some sort of ban in Ward 5. Such a ban could cover limited, or extensive areas. It is not yet clear, but there have been talks involving certain officials. Do residents, or business owners/employees, [please state your ward and approximate location in terms of block and affiliation in terms of resident, business owner/employee/ect.] think there is support? This is, of course, due to be the subject of public meetings, so this is just a simple blog question, and nothing official. WP Recent Crime
The Post looks back at some of the shootings that occurred during a recent crime spike that gripped the District. Here's the map. Here are some details about each of the killings [worth the read] in our area and beyond.
Notable details I hadn't seen reported before-
Tory Wilcher, 30, died April 2nd from a gunshot to the head. He worked as a plumber, and had reportedly flashed money from a cashed paycheck during a dice game that descended into an argument. His body was discovered in the 800 block of 19th Street. The 18 year old with whom he argued was arrested April 27th, and face 2nd degree murder charges.
Gayle Tonnett Ferguson, 38, was beaten to death, possibly with a hammer, in an alley behind the 1700 block of Montello. According to other news reports, at least one resident heard screams around 1am, but failed to call the police. Her body was discovered later that morning. She had been beaten beyond recognition, and her body was partially stuffed under an ice cream truck. This was on April 16th. An neighborhood resident, Oliver Jones, 50, was arrested in the murder.
Darvell Stewart, was the 18 year old male who died after being shot multiple times in an alley behind the 1600 block of Montello [April 16th]. The Post reports that police are investigating whether this may have been related to a domestic dispute.
Brandon Gaines, 25, was shot multiple times on Maryland Ave [Carver Terrace] on April 22nd. The Post reports that police are investigation whether his death may been related to a recent investigation into a drug ring in the area.
Melvin Seals, the 30 year old man who died outside Joe Cole Rec early on the morning of April 26th, was shot 17 times. Residents I spoke to reported a brief pause in the middle of the shots.

His body was discovered in the 800 block of 19th Street. The 18 year old with whom he argued was arrested April 27th, and face 2nd degree murder charges.
Gayle Tonnett Ferguson, 38, was beaten to death, possibly with a hammer, in an alley behind the 1700 block of Montello. According to other news reports, at least one resident heard screams around 1am, but failed to call the police. Her body was discovered later that morning. She had been beaten beyond recognition, and her body was partially stuffed under an ice cream truck. This was on April 16th. An neighborhood resident, Oliver Jones, 50, was arrested in the murder.
Darvell Stewart, was the 18 year old male who died after being shot multiple times in an alley behind the 1600 block of Montello [April 16th]. The Post reports that police are investigating whether this may have been related to a domestic dispute.
Brandon Gaines, 25, was shot multiple times on Maryland Ave [Carver Terrace] on April 22nd. The Post reports that police are investigation whether his death may been related to a recent investigation into a drug ring in the area.
Melvin Seals, the 30 year old man who died outside Joe Cole Rec early on the morning of April 26th, was shot 17 times. Residents I spoke to reported a brief pause in the middle of the shots.

The Triangle of Land Near Gallaudet
A tiny patch of not long vacant land has recently become a topic of conversation, and a few listserv emails. The patch of land is in ANC 6A, but it is close to the boundary of 5B, so people on both sides of the line have taken notice. If you have an interest in the land's future, you might want to check out the meeting below-
ANC representative Raphael Marshall will host a neighborhood meeting on 7 May 2007 at 7pm SHARP at the Holy Names Church, 900 Block of 11th Street, NE Between I and K Streets.
The agenda will include the proposed usage of land at Florida, West Virginia and 9th streets for a possible dog park, flower garden, etc.
I am pushing for a community sponsored dog park with assistance from pet stores, the Humane Society and environmental groups. Please come support a new dog park in this spot.

RCA Meeting Monday

We will be discussing recent crime in the area, transportation and
traffic issues, the
current and future recreation/community center, and our community
garden, among other things.

The announcement, which was labeled as an announcement, was not an endorsement. I will happily post information about any candidate for Alan Kimber's vacant seat in ANC 6C. Check out this website for Langston Bar and Grille [WEBSITE PLAYS JAZZ], which will be opening shortly at 1831 Benning Road. The menu is soul food, with an emphasis on fresh, organic, and free range ingredients. The Chef is Terrel Danley. Here's part of his bio from the website-

Future Pie-in-the-Sky Metro Version
DCist has a post on the topic, and has linked to a map showing some locations, of the changes Metro has said it might like to make over the next 20 years, and that map depicts, not one, but two H Street stations. The proposed stations are located at 7th and H, and the Starburst intersection. Pretty cool, but don't expect action anytime soon. This appears to be more of a wish-list for the moment. At least Metro dares to dream.
