Local News Round Up

IMG_945

Some exciting real estate news comes via the Washington City Paper. Jair Lynch Development Partners acquired those big government buildings on the south side of the 600 block of H Street. They paid $51.5 million. No word yet on exactly what they have planned. And discount clothier Fashion One is closing. Prince of Petworth confirmed with them that they have lost their lease.

You'll probably also want to check out this gentrification discussion over at Housing Complex.

In restaurant news the City Paper reports that The Big Board (421 H Street) will hopefully open October 8th. CP also says that Mike Lunsford, formerly sous chef at Granville Moore's (1238 H Street), will serve as head chef at The Big Board. DCist and Eater sound excited that Toki Underground (2nd floor of 1234 H Street) will soon host Baohaus chef Eddie Huang. It's a pop-up event planned for October 14th and 15th. During the event Huang and Toki Underground head chef Erik Bruner-Yang will work the line together, and no doubt produce some amazing fare.

It's also not too late to catch Stop Kiss at the H Street Playhouse. It's gotten some pretty good press, and it runs through October 2nd. Reviews: DCist, MD Theatre Guide, We Love DC, Wasington City Paper, Brightest Young Things, Washington Post, and Metro Weekly.

ABC7: Man Gets 20 Years in 2009 Bus Shooting

ABC7 reports that 19 year old Jeffrey Britt was sentenced on Friday to 20 years in prison for the 2009 murder of George Rawlings as Rawlings attempted to board a mid-day bus in the 1400 block of H Street. Rawlings had just left the funeral of a friend at Capitol Mortuary (behind the Argo) o on Maryland Avenue. Two other men have pled guilty in the 2009 shooting, and await sentencing. I believe the theory was that Rawlings was shot because others thought he had played a role in the murder of the friend who's funeral he had just attended. George Rawlings was the older brother of Deonte Rawlings, who was shot in the back by off duty MPD officers in 2007.

Found Dog Near 17th & E NE

photo

A reader writes in regarding a dog she found:

I live in Rosedale and while walking my own two dogs this morning (around 7:30 am Thursday) this little dog (a female Yorkie) followed us nearly into our house. She isn't wearing a collar, and she was soaking wet so may have spent the night outside. She's friendly though a little shy. We've put her in our backyard for now, in hopes that we can find her owners quickly. I can be reached at bcourtot (at) yahoo.com.

More Moisture Problems at H Street Self Storage

Frozen Tropics H Street Self Storage.jpg
I've posted before about moisture problems at H Street Self Storage. Last time it was a leaky roof, and failure to cover the area while making repairs to the roof. This time, the story's a little different, as you can see from this reader's account:

We have had a storage facility at H St Storage for the past 7 years. When I went to my locker last week, I was told that the earthquake on August 23 caused the sprinklers to go off. I didn't notice anything wet, but today when I went back and moved some cardboard boxes there were puddles under them that had soaked through. We called our insurance agent and took pics. We have another crate to go through with a computer and other office equipment in it. A couple of other patrons were there and their stuff had gotten wet, too. We called our insurance agent and took pics.

H Street Storage has never notified its customers and the place has started to smell musty...in a week or so everything is going to be mildewed and beyond repair!!!

Atlas Vet Coming to 1326 H Street

Atlas

I can finally confirm those rumors I'd heard about a vet coming to the east end of the H Street Corridor. Atlas Vet will have four exam rooms and provide routine care, vaccinations, general surgery, dentistry, etc., but will not be a 24 hour hospital. Atlas Vet will have a booth outside 1326 H Street at tomorrow's festival. Stop by and say hi. You can also like them on facebook, and follow them on twitter. They hope to be open by the end of the year.

Weatherize DC Comes to Capitol Hill

A reader wrote in to let me know about a new local chapter of Weatherize DC. The thrust of WeatherizeDC's work is to help people weatherize their homes in order to save on energy bills and reduce fossil fuel consumption. Weatherize DC also focuses on creating green jobs for DC residents by hiring contractors from training programs to do the actual weatherization work. They offer services like home energy audits (perhaps a good idea as we head into fall), and are actively seeking new members who are passionate about these issues. There's a little statement they put together (contact info at the end)after the jump.

HSGS: Po Boys Kitchen Applies for Liquor License

IMG_2416
709 is the Alex Seafood building in this 2006 photo

H Street Great Street beat me to the punch on the story on a new restaurant that hopes to come to 709 H Street. Po Boys Kitchen, which (unsurprisingly) will serve po-boy sandwiches, has just applied for a liquor license (a CR). This would be the first sitdown restaurant on a block that's home to carryouts like Crown Fried Chicken (I'm told it's some of the best chicken on H Street), Grace Deli (actually a real deli menu), and Major's (my pick for best Chinese food on H Street). This is just more evidence that the gap between developments on the east and western ends of the Corridor is beginning to close.

WP: More on the Wheeler Homicide

The Washington Post has more information on the murder of Alecia Wheeler (42) who was stabbed to death Tuesday shortly after picking up here four children from a recreation center. Her accused killer, Claude Kinney, is also the father of three of her children. They had a history of domestic violence, and Kinney had threatened to kill her before. She had sought help from the courts. On August 12th she sought a one year protective order that would have barred Kinney from coming near her. The court granted her a two week protective order, but at an August 29th hear the judge declined to grant a one year order. Wheeler returned to court last week and obtained another two week order. Her children are now in the District's care. Kinney has been arrested at least 17 times in DC since the 1980s, but has only one minor drug conviction.

[Editor's note: I'm not entirely sure of the spelling of the names on this one. I've also seen the victim's first name spelled Alicia, and the suspect's name spelled Kenny]

WP: Taylor Cheesesteaks? YES!

The Washington Post's Tim Carman reports that our buddies over at Taylor Gourmet are expanding their sandwich empire in a new way. Rather than just a new location (they're doing that too), they're adding a whole new kind of sandwich, the Philadelphia cheesteak. The new operation, Taylor Charles Steak & Ice, opens its doors this December at 1320 H Street. I have to say they kept this one pretty under wraps. I had heard that an established business person on H Street was opening a new concept, but I did not hear about this.

The guys behind Taylor Gourmet are tacking this new mission with their usual gusto, so expectations are high. Carman documents their research travels in the article (complete with photos). I'm personally thrilled that they have again chosen H Street as a launching pad and flagship. Eater points out that they will also be serving Italian water ice. This will be third place on H Street to serve water ice (Rita's and Philadelphia water Ice).

Fatal Stabbing in the 1200 Block of Morse

A 42 year old woman was attacked by the father of at least one of her children. The woman's four children (the oldest one is 9), who she had just picked up from a recreation center, witnessed the stabbing. Police are not releasing her name, or the name of the suspect. This occurred in the 1200 block of Morse Street. The Washington Post has more info, as does Fox news. This is in the Trinidad neighborhood.

Tonight's ANC 5B Meeting

2011-09-01 19.38.45

This was the first public meeting since the financial scandal broke. It was a very animated meeting, with lots of big news. As I noted before William Shelton (former Chair of ANC 5B) resigned as Commissioner effective today. Here are the highlights:

-New Board elected. Comm. Regina James is Chair. Comm. Jackie Manning is Vice-Chair. Comm. Bernice Blackwell is the new Financial Secretary.

-Executive sessions of ANC 5B will now be open to the public.

-It's unclear whether they will have to pay the $5k+ that the staff person (hired by former Chair William Shelton) claims she is owed. She had no written agreement with the ANC. They will investigate their options and obligations . They've been paying their staff person (it wasn't always the same one) a little under $20k a year. I've never been very clear on what exactly the staff person did. The staffing arrangement is highly unusual for ANCs.

-Comm. Davis announced that she will resign (effective October 1st).

1118 is the one with the Birdland sign

Prince of Petworth points out that 1118 H Street is back on the market. This bears noting because it was supposed to be either a Cajun restaurant, or a Mediterranean spot, from the guys behind Slice of Life.

CP: What's Up at Murry's?

IMG_0934
The City Paper does a little digging into what exactly is going on a Murry's. It's a question I've been getting a lot recently. I knew they had dug some test wells in July, and that the building (which extends all the way to H Street Self Storage) had sold for $3.4 million roughly a year ago, but that was it. No one I asked seemed to know exactly what was happening. We still don't have all the answers, but here's some more info from the City Paper:
-The parcel is under contract and should go to settlement in November.
-The current owner is one Jerry Schaeffer, who the City Paper calls a "taxicab magnate."
-Schaeffer apparently also owns the future Walmart site on Bladensburg Road.

HWDC: Fogle Murder Update

Homicide Watch D.C. has charging docs in the August 29th murder of 17 year old Tyrell Fogle. Anthony Hatton, 18, is accused of chasing and shooting Fogle in the 1900 block of Bennett Place (in the Langston Terrace neighborhood). Hatton, of SE DC, wore a mask as he chased Fogle and fired several shots at him from a 9mm Beretta. Fogle died of his wounds shortly thereafter.

Granville Moore's (1238 H Street) teams up with Flying Dog Brewery for a most delicious sounding beer feast September 27th. The beer dinners can sound a little pricey, but I'm told they are worth every penny. Check out the full menu (and description from Granville's website) after the jump.

Taylor Gourmet Relents on Mayo Issue

Taylor Gourmet has, in the past, proudly trumpeted its no mayo policy. This rubbed some patrons the wrong way, but didn't seem to hurt business. They guys at Taylor have had a change of heart, and are now happy to offer their customers mayo, spicy brown mustard, and whole wheat bread upon request. Come on, I'm not huge fan of mayo myself, but even I'm moved by the dancing Hellman's guy in the background.
