Plan Ahead for Saturday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

It's that time of the year again. The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is headed our way this Saturday. Runners will once again move down K Street, 4th Street, H Street, and 13th Street. Expect to see road closures in our area from around 6:30am-2pm. If you will be traveling at all that day you will want to look at a map of the entire race route.

The streetcar has been in the news a lot lately and you likely know that the future of the larger system is in jeopardy. WP: Island Dyes Robbed at Gunpoint

The Washington Post has a story on the recent gunpoint robbery of Island Dyes (a headshop located at 331 H Street). Island Dyes sells pipes (for tobacco use), t-shirts, posters, incense, and more. According to the article the two robbers wore all black and one wore a black mask. The one employee who was present at the time was not injured during the robbery. The gunmen left with cash.

Before You Attend the 3/10 ANC 5D Meeting

There were some delays getting the video for the February 2nd ANC 5D meeting (and then more delays when I had the flu for over a week), so I figured it was best just to wait until closer to the March meeting to post this. The above is a video running nearly two hours. It cuts off before the presentations (the meeting ran very long at about 2.5 hours). You can listen to an audio recording of the entire meeting courtesy of Trinidad resident Nick Russo and his very cool project the Ward 5 Audio Archive. I also Storified the meeting (mostly just some tweets, but a little background as well). It's useful if you enjoy that sort of thing, or want to more fully understand the context/subtext.

All Metrobuses Will Stop Running Tonight at 9pm

Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival Returns Saturday April 25th

The Sixth Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival is happening Saturday April 25th (12-8pm). This year's festival features two main stages of bluegrass and Americana music with co-headliners Cabinet and Larry Keel Experience and more. The festival will celebrate local music, food, and culture as well as the revitalization of the Anacostia River, while supporting hands-on education programming provided by Living Classrooms on Kingman Island. The event has grown to become the largest all-local music festival in the National Capital Region, attracting over 13,000 attendees in 2014. This is a family friendly event that is held outdoors (bring sunscreen, water, & bug spray).

Granville's Takes a (Brief) Mussels Break

For the first time in more than 7 years, there are no Moules on the menu at Granville Moore’s (1238 H Street) tonight. Due to the weather-related mussel shortage on the East Coast, Granville Moore’s will be running a limited menu today and tomorrow. In lieu of Mussel Monday, the restaurant will be offering a special $12 pricetag on their Bison & Veggie Burgers all night long (starting at 5pm).

Star & Shamrock Celebrates Purim ("the Jewish St. Patrick's Day") with Spring Shenanigans

The Star and Shamrock (1341 H Street) prepares to kick off its first-ever, month-long Spring Shenanigans Simcha Festival, launching this coming Wednesday, March 4th, the first night of the Jewish holiday, Purim. Dubbed by the deli/tavern as “the Jewish St. Patrick’s Day”, this particular Jewish holiday is famously celebrated by being drunk on happiness, with the help of lots of good alcohol. In fact, the Talmud even instructs Jewish people to celebrate the holiday as "yemei mishteh v'simchah, days of drinking and rejoicing" (Esther 9:22). With guidelines like that, this is clearly a holiday for people of all faiths. Staying true to its Irish-Jewish namesake, Star and Shamrock is setting course to mark this “Jewish St. Patrick’s Day” with a Purim Party packed with as much revelry as its upcoming Irish one.

2 Great Fundraisers for Local Kids: Alchemy of Great Taste & Bright Beginnings 5K

I've got news up two upcoming events to raise money to help local kids (both of these actual events are outside my usual coverage zone, but I making an exception because I feel they impact some families that live around here. One, Alchemy of Great tastes raises money to benefit students at Tyler Elementary on Capitol Hill. District Source: The Stealth isn't Hiding at Florida & West Virginia

I have gotten a fair number of questions regarding the construction project immediately south of Florida and West Virginia. It's a four unit condo building, and with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms each these are pretty large condo units. The Stealth takes its name from the site's resemblance to the "v" shape of a Stealth Bomber. More details from District Source.

In case you haven't heard, Atlas Brew Works (2052 West Virginia Avenue, Suite 102) is running a pretty cool competition in which they have invited amateur brewers to attempt to "mimic the flavor, aroma, and appearance of Atlas' signature beer, Rowdy." Any amateur brewer who is of legal drinking age and able to provide samples for competition tasting Friday April 10th (to be held at Atlas' Ivy City brewery). Samples will be judged by a panel of industry pros, headed by Head Brewer Will Durgin. The grand prize winner will have the chance to assist with brewing a batch of Rowdy. ABC Board Votes to Continue Summary Suspension of Halftime Sports Bar Liquor License

The following is based on an order from the District of Columbia's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (case: 15-251-00033, order: 2015-049, dated 2/18/2015):

In a devastating move for Halftime Sports Bar (1427 H Street) the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board has voted 3 to 2 (one abstention) to continue to the summary suspension of the bar and grill's license until a show cause hearing can be held. Halftime Sports Bar is the H Street Corridor's only operating sports bar (there's at least one more sports bar in the works). It was shuttered by MPD on January 31st of this year following an incident the previous evening in which owner Karl Graham allegedly drew a pistol (an H&K semi-automatic .40 caliber) on a man named Fred Thompson after Thompson reportedly threatened Graham verbally ("...oughta' fuck you up") and made a lunging motion towards him. Thompson was not a patron of Halftime.

Kathy Henderson's seized NW condo (the only mentioned in the complaint) is now up for auction. The listing actually went up February 4th, which happens to be the same day Mark Thorp's house was raided and his dog impounded.

 The following document was posted online earlier today. It's a complaint from local resident and bar owner Mark Thorp (Jimmy Valentine's and Little Miss Whiskey's) alleging that MPD improperly knocked down three doors into Thorp's home in a no knock execution of a search warrant. The search warrant apparently arose from an allegation of animal cruelty against Thorp's dog. I'm acquainted with Mr. Thorp's dog, Vaughn, who has seemed to me to be extremely well treated. Members of MPD's Vice Unit (accompanied by animal control) seized Thorp's dog and further searched his house.

HR-57 Plans Long-Term Pop-Up at Gallaudet Pavilion (Behind Union Market) [UPDATED]

I typically put updates at the bottom of posts, but I wanted to make sure that readers saw this one. When HR-57 closed their space on H Street, the owner talked about an offer he couldn't refuse for a space in NW. That is still happening (there is some stuff that DC Gov and other players have to do first, so it might take about a year). This pop-up is NOT a substitute for that space, it's more like a side project. I did not mention the NW space in my initial post because it is outside my coverage area. This pop-up is something that HR-57 is doing in association with Gallaudet University. Gallaudet is providing the land to HR-57 at no cost. HR-57's owner just has to clean up the long vacant lot (which he has largely done) and use it as a music and community space. I never meant to suggest that this side project was meant to replace HR-57's efforts in NW, but it seems that the omission lead some people to believe that was the case. Sorry for any confusion.

I am thrilled to tell you about the latest local venture from HR-57 owner Tony Puesan. He's going to bring a pop-up form of HR-57 to a space he dubs the Gallaudet Pavilion. The Pavilion will be located on the fenced grassy area behind Union Market. That site had the old market sheds that were erected for vendor use before construction was complete on the original Union Terminal Market (AKA the Florida Avenue Market), but after vendors had to relocate from the old Central Market to make way for the National Archives building.

Have You Been to Honeycomb Yet?

If you frequent Union Market (1309 5th Street) the chances are good that you've noticed a little shop selling Asian groceries tucked into the tiny space next to Harvey's Meats. That little shop is Honeycomb, and it's a retail project from Toki Underground's (2nd floor of 1224 H Street) Chef Erik Bruner-Yang. While Toki may draw crowds for its bowls of steamy ramen and orders of dumplings, Honeycomb tempts with offerings of a different sort. The fridges are lined with a variety of homemade kimchi, miso pastes, pickled veggies, kombuchas, sauces, noodles, Korean rice cakes, and more.

Pizza Parts & Service Mysteriously Closed [UPDATED]

I don't have the full story on this, but I wanted to write a quick note because I have been getting a fair number of emails about it. Pizza Parts & Service is currently closed. I believe this is day three of the closure and there's been little explanation of what's happening. The Taylor sibling was tweeting along fair steadily with no mention of the development until about 17 hours ago when it tweeted the following:

Halftime Sports Bar Shuttered by MPD (UPDATED)

The above notice was posted on the door to Halftime Sports Bar

On a day when one would expect to see crowds gathered in local sports bars, Halftime Sports Bar (1427 H Street) sits empty. A notice posted in the front window indicated that the MPD closed the bar down effective 11:12pm January 31st. I was first alerted to this situation by Chris Miller (who is the ANC Commissioner for 6C05) via Twitter (@cemiller9903). Miller indicated that he was on an MPD ride-along last night when an officer informed him that there had been an altercation on Friday and the MPD had discovered that the owner of the establishment had a gun in his possession. I ventured over earlier today to verify the closure. Upon sitting down to write this post I realized that Jay Williams (former ANC rep. from ANC 6A and current Chair of the ANC 6A ABL Committee) was tweeting more details about the incident. Among these details: the owner allegedly pulled a gun during the altercation and MPD Chief Cathy Lanier is recommending that the bar's liquor license be revoked. Ultimately that decision rests with ABRA, but Lanier has the ability to shutter an establishment for up to 96 hours if she:

Addis Ethiopian Restaurant Now Open at 707 H Street

District Cuisine posted something January 19th announcing that Addis would open within a week or so and it happened last night. Late last week I was able to briefly chat with the owner who told me that they will immediately (soft) open with lunch and dinner service seven days a week. Addis does not currently have a liquor license, but the owner told me he intended obtain some sort of license that would allow Addis to serve beer and wine in the near future. Addis will have 59 seats with a total occupancy of 65. They will be child friendly, with highchairs available. They do plan to offer some sort of children's menu during certain times/days, but it seems like they are still trying to work that out. They do not anticipate offering any sort of entertainment in the near future. 707 H Street has been many things in recent years including J & V Pawn, and more recently the clothing stores Unik Style and Casual Corner. Back in 2011 someone also tried to open a place called Xclusive at 707 H.

Cities need gardens!  The community of ANC6a in Northeast Washington DC is growing with development and an exciting place to live.  The Wylie Street Garden has created community among the longtime and new residents over 10 years.  Two of three lots are privately owned and one is owned by H Street Community Development Corporation HSCDC.  The community of this neighborhood, HSCDC and property owners recognize the how public gardens bring value to our lives.  Time spent engaged in a green space after creates appreciation, communication, reflection and conversation.  We intend to save and update the only remaining green space along the H Street corridor as the heart of H Street that represents our historical path of perseverance.  Signing this petition will make a difference in every day of our city living in a great neighborhood.

Kathy Henderson Channels Kirby Delauter (AKA Stop Filming Public ANC Meetings)

Kathy Henderson is hopping mad that someone filmed two recent public ANC 5D meetings (portions of one meeting and the entirety of a second meeting) and posted them on YouTube. She really doesn't like that I embedded the videos on my blog so more people could watch them. She posted some weird messages to the Ward5 email list last night. Here is the exchange for your edification:

Okay, Friday's ANC 5D special meeting was the shortest ANC meeting I've ever been to (17 minutes); it was also exciting and full of surprises. First surprise: the ANC voted 3 to 2 not to participate in the ANC Security Fund. This caught me completely off guard and led to the second surprise: me on video. This is not me at my most articulate, and I certainly did not plan to be on camera. But very soon after the vote, Chair Kathy Henderson adjourned the meeting and I jumped up and asked for a little more discussion of the issue because I had not even contemplated the possibility of the ANC voting against participation. However, as I learned from subsequent discussion with the commissioners who opposed joining the ANC Security Fund, they had good reason to do so.

I'm getting conflicting reports of a shooting on H Street NE. I suspect that what may have happened is that there was a shooting near 8th & H and the victim (or another involved party) progressed to around 11th or 12th and H and headed east. I understand that portions of H Street have been blocked off.

[UPDATE: I'm told the shooting actually occurred in the 900 block of H Street, possibly in the H Street Connection parking lot near the 7-11]

Reminder: ANC 5D Special Meeting Tomorrow (Friday)

ANC 5D Chair Kathy Henderson has scheduled (notice was sent out last week, so it is timely) a special meeting for 7-7:30pm tomorrow evening (because it is never a bad sign to schedule a public meeting for a Friday night). This meeting concerns financial matter (participation in the ANC Security Fund). This is the only topic on the agenda.

Suspect Arrested in Non-Fatal Shooting of Two on X2 Bus

Metro Transit Police have arrested the man suspected of shooting and injuring two people when he fired into a crowded Metrobus following a verbal altercation. They have also identified the female person of interest who was traveling with Brown at the time of the shooting.

Local food business incubator Union Kitchen (1110 Congress Street) is hosting a six-week series of Thursday evening entrepreneurship training classes.

MPD Seeks Alleged Shooter & Person of Interest in Non-Fatal Shootings on the X2 Bus

Metro Transit release are seeking information about the two people pictured above in relation to a shooting incident that resulted in non-critical injuries of two passenger on the X2 bus Monday night. The male (alleged shooter) is described as 5'10" with a slim build.

Above you'll find  a the press release (white space cropped for convenience) sent out by ANC 5D Chair Kathy Henderson. At first glance you might mistake this for an official District of Columbia letter because it does have that little DC flag that you see on government press releases and agency communications. But this is no official letter. This is merely Henderson railing against her fellow commissioners on ANC 5D. It starts off with a first paragraph that contains inaccuracies. Henderson suggests that newly elected Commissioner Adam Roberts (who was sworn in after other commissioners because he was out of the country during the initial ceremony) didn't prove he was eligible to act as a fully sworn-in ANC. That's not the case. Roberts was sworn in by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. During the meeting Roberts read a communication from Executive Director of the Office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions Gottlieb Simon indicating that Roberts was eligible to both vote and hold office.

After my last post on the ANC 5D Meeting a commenter asked why Comm. Roberts did not dispute the untrue statements of ANC 5D Chair Kathy Henderson. He did. I am told that he explained it early on in the meeting (not recorded on video), and also at the end of the meeting. Comm. Henderson responded by immediately ending the meeting. That video appears above. The audience member interrupting Comm. Roberts is India Henderson (who formerly held the seat now occupied by Comm. Roberts). India resigned mid-term to move out of ANC 5D.

Thrills! Chills! Deception! It's ANC 5D the Movie!

We have something special today via Edward Milton who filmed the ANC 5D meeting and has pledged to film future meetings. This is especially important because ANC 5D Chair Kathy Henderson continues to insist that all ANC 5D meetings be held completely outside ANC 5D boundaries. Kind of not a bad plan...if you want to make it more difficult for constituents to attend meetings.

Nerds in NoMa Returns Tonight

The free DC-centric speaker series Nerds in NoMa kicks off its new season tonight with a look at DC food trucks. Treasure Trucks (RSVP) runs from 6-8pm (1200 1st Street NE).

A member of the team from the Pursuit Wine Bar (1421 H Street) sent in this photo of a streetcar and and silver car getting all up close and personal tonight in the 1400 block of H Street. MPD are on the scene. I  assume based on the photo that there were no injuries. A few days ago a car hit (it was the car driver's fault) a streetcar near 6th and H.
