I'll be busy with bar exam stuff for the next few days, so there probably will not be any posts before Thursday or Friday.
In the mean time people can speculate as to whether something might be going on at Mickey's [shown above] where the sign recently came down. The orange thing is NOT a stop work order.
A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

There Will Be Cops...on Morse
Honestly, I don't know, but there are massive numbers of cops [including Groomes] in the 1200 block. Police are not giving out any info, just telling people to move on. There appear to be 2 bikes close to Groomes and the officers in the center of the cordoned off area [there are also many parked cars]. No further info available at this time. Some police cars, all 5-D have begun to leave.
===================
UPDATE
===================
Apparently this is all about the gold Intrepid used in the recent shootings. Police identified what appears to be the same car [now sporting permanent DC tags] in the 1200 block of Morse. The occupants of a blue vehicle located down the street exited their vehicle and attempted to enter the Intrepid, but were apprehended by the police mid-attempt. It looks like some arrests may have been made, and the questioning of one young male was on-going as I left the scene.UPDATE

=======================
UPDATE
=======================
I think I was wrong about the arrest thing, someone who left after I did said everyone just seemed to go home and they didn't see anyone get arrested. I don't know if it was the same car, but police definitely seemed interested in that gold Intrepid for that reason last night.

No Soccer Tonight Due to Weather
Some pretty fierce weather has been predicted for tonight. As a result tonight's pick-up game at Sherwood has been canceled for safety reasons.
The ANC 5B Meeting and Thursday's Hearing
Last night ANC 5B held a special meeting to discuss and vote on Thursday's zoning hearing regarding the Gateway Market Residences. The ten of twelve commissioners were present with one arriving after the vote, so nine of us voted. Our options were, support completely, support with certain conditions required, or oppose. The idea of supporting with certain conditions [conditional approval] was what I proposed. My proposed conditions appear below. The idea of giving conditional approval was rejected, so we only voted on support, or don't support [basically the same thing as oppose]. Here's the final breakdown of votes-
5B01 William Shelton [Chair]- support
5B02 Patricia Brown-Daniels- absent
5B03 Raymond Chandler- absent
5B04 Rayseen Woodland- arrived too late to vote
5B05 Rosetta Davis- abstain
5B06 Wilhelmina Lawson- support
5B07 David Hooper- support
5B08 Elise Bernard- oppose [against supporting]
5B09 Jacqueline Manning- support
5B10 India Henderson- support
5B11 William Myers- support
5B12 Maude Ababio- support
So the final vote was 7/9 to support unconditionally.
Some other interesting things about the meeting-
The developer's lobbyist [John Ray] sent one of his employees [Ms. Ang] to the meeting to answer questions, but she couldn't answer everything, including questions previously raised at the zoning hearing [she was there], or ANC 6C meeting. She planned to give no presentation, and came unprepared to make one. I asked her about this prior to the meeting and she informed me that no presentation was necessary because we were only here to vote. Consequently, she made no presentation. She did very briefly talk about the project, but this was only after I asked Ms. Ang a question, and people in the audience chimed in saying that they didn't have any information about the project.
I'd like to point out that when John Ray's group recently attended the ANC6C meeting they had a different, and well informed presenter who not only gave a thorough presentation, but was able to answer questions. While it is true that this group has appeared before our ANC before [but only once in the past year and a half], I think it was a bit of the slap in the face that they didn't give another presentation immediately prior to the vote. Such a presentation would have been important for three reasons-
1. the constituents present did not feel they had sufficient information about the project. It is, after all, the ANC's job to respresent the interests of its constituents.
2. there have been modifications to the project since the last hearing before the Zoning Commission. Ms. Ang was unable to explain what any of those modifications might be.
3. We had a new commissioner present who has not received any of the mailed materials on the project, or seen a presentation on it, so she had no familiarity with the project, and simply voted blindly.
Here is soe information about the conditions I wanted inserted into our letter of approval-
1. Follow the Small Area Plan- ANC 5B orginally requested that the Office of Planning undertake the Small Area Plan. According to the Office of Planning's wesite [this is not directly quoted], The puropose of the Small Area Plan is to create a conceptual land use program. It aims to determine the viability of the wholesale functions and determine the best and highest use of the Market site. The goal is to provide a vision and strategic development framework for future development of the Market and adjacent properties. The Small Area Plan will provide recommendations for height, use, massing, density, zoning, and functionality. The Small Area Plan is important because it provides a forum for thoughtful community input. A series of meetings have been held as a part of the Small Area Plan. The Small Area Plan was paused at the request of this developer, who now claims that they need to bypass the Small Area Plan because it is taking too long. The Small Area Plan is scheduled for completion in September, and would have already been completed had it not been paused. During the meeting Ms. Ang said the Office of Planning had said this building was “not inconsistent with the Small Area Plan.” As part of the Small Area Plan the Office of Planning recommended not constructing residential units next to industrial uses, which is exactly what this developer is doing.
2. Change Retail from inward facing to outward facing- current plans call for floor to ceiling exterior windows, so as the Office of Planning pointed out, inward facing retail would result in the view from the street of the back of business' storage rooms. That's hardly a very inviting view for those on the street. This was an issue raised at both the last zoning hearing, and the ANC 6C meeting, but Ms. Ang was unable to tell me whether there had been any change to the plan.
3. The developer agree to not go to the City Council on other projects in the Market without ANC approval of community benefits packages.
4. The developer not pursue Project Labor Agreements on other projects in the Market- the deal here is that these agreements result in requirements that workers be union members. The vast majority of DC contractors and laborers in the construction field are non-union workers. This is especially true when you look at minority contractors in DC. When you enter into agreements like this you effectively lock out most otherwise eligible DC workers.
5. Increase the diversity of the affordable units- right now the twenty percent of affordable condo units are all affordable for people earning 80 percent of the Area Median Income. Many other developments stagger this with some units being affordable to people making considerably less that 80 percent of the AMI.
Other important considerations that I mentioned-
1. This is a condo development. right now the condo market in DC is not good. Even Senate Square, a project in a more desirable location, and built by an experienced developer [the developer behind the Gateway Market Residences has NO development experience], has been forced to go apartment and now sits largely empty. The NoMA area is a site of heavy condo construction. An economist hired by the Office of Planning stated that he felt that residential units on that site were not viable economically.
Our ANC will send a separate non-binding letter addressing the concerns that I raised at the meeting. Our attorney will draft the letter.
I'd like to address something our Chair said last night that I thought was very misleading. He strongly implied that ANC 6C had wrongly gotten involved in this project and that such involvement from a neighboring ANC was, as he put it, unheard of. That isn't at all true. As the Zoning Commission noted at the last hearing, talking to, and seeking approval from neighboring ANCs is standard for such projects when they abut the other ANC. Our Chair also implied that ANC 6C was taking things away from Trinidad. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have a copy of ANC 6C's conditional letter of support and it doesn't quest a single amenity for ANC 6C. It only talks about the building, preserving desirable aspects of the Market, the retail plan, support of small local businesses who are tenants in the building, and diversity in the AMI for the affordable units.
We had a decent crowd last night. I'd be interested in hearing from those in the audience.
The zoning hearing is tomorrow night. Here are the details-

WP: Recent Shootings
The Post reports on the 7 people shot, one fatally, early Saturday morning in Trinidad. Police have confirmed that they are looking at two unrelated vehicles moving through Trinidad. The 2002 gold Dodge Intrepid, which was involved in three of the shooting incidents, including that of 13 year old Alonzo Robinson, and a black sedan that entered the neighborhood and shot a man and a teen. One witness in the shooting of Alonzo said the attack was not preceded by a robbery. He stated that the Intrepid approached the group, a man in the sedan yelled to the group and then opened fire. Police have made no arrests in the shootings.

WP: Checkpoints Return
The Post reports that the checkpoints will return for five days. As the Post reports, but facts are still getting sorted out here, it currently appears that the groups the men in the car sought to rob were chosen at random. This also means that the shooting victims were randomly chosen, and not targeted for any other reason than that they happened to be outside at the wrong time. Personally, I would wonder why if a single group's goal was to rob people they didn't immediately take off and leave the neighborhood after the first robbery that went so wrong that someone was shot. Police plan to release sketches of the suspects shortly. Please note Chief Lanier's comment [also referenced in an email below] that all of the victims in the associated incidents were shot in the back, or shot while attempting to flee their attackers.
Also, I wanted to point out the text message service that is now available. You can contact the police by texting the number 50411. Please note that the police refer to this as their anonymous text number, so they won't be calling you back. This is a handy tool anytime, and works very well in situations where you can't just get on the phone and tell the operator what you are seeing. It also means not spending time on hold. But you still need to call the cops if you need to talk to an operator and give a description of a suspect, or anything else, so DO NOT USE THE TEXT SERVICE IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. The text message service is probably best for things like alerting the police that drug dealers are standing on your corner doing business, but not so good for reporting the fight going on outside. Here's what MPD says about their new text service-
Give 5-0 the 411 with the new Text Tip Line: 50411. Text messages are monitored by members of the department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Tips are then analyzed and passed on to the appropriate unit or division for follow-up. Because the tip line is anonymous, the sender will not receive a response to the original message.
Neither of these anonymous tips lines is an emergency number. If you witness a crime in progress or have an emergency that requires the police, please call 911.

Good evening, fellow residents.
In light of the recent surge of violence associated with the cowardly robberies and shootings that have taken place in the Trinidad Community last evening and early this morning, I have ordered that the Neighborhood Safety Zone (NSZ) be instituted beginning at 7 PM tonight. The Neighborhood Safety Zone will be in place in Trinidad and will run through the next five days.
This NSZ is a tool designed to keep the residents of Trinidad safe from the senseless violence and cowardly acts that have just occurred in the neighborhood, by preventing the craven perpetrators who have traveled via automobile to commit these heinous crimes in Trinidad from entering the neighborhood. I cannot thank you enough for all of your support and want to assure you that we are taking these and other measures in a direct attempt to keep you safe in this community.
Thank you, and rest assured we are working very hard to stop this violence and bring the responsible criminals to justice. Considering that thirteen year-old Alonzo Robinson tragically lost his life last night, and several other individuals were seriously wounded, I am urging anyone with information related to any of these crimes to contact a detective through 202-727-9099 or provide information anonymously on 1-888-919-CRIME, or by text messaging to 50-411. You can also voluntarily provide information to officers on duty in the Trinidad Community, including those staffing checkpoints and obtain a flyer providing you with information about the shootings and our hotline numbers.
I have additionally authorized a reward of up to $50,000 for the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the murder of Alonzo Robinson, 13 years of age, which occurred at approximately 2:30 AM, this morning, July 19, 2008, in the 1500 block of Holbrook Place, NE.

MPD INVESTIGATES MULTIPLE VIOLENT CRIMES ESTABLISHES SECOND NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY ZONE IN TRINIDAD
(Washington, DC) -- City Administrator Dan Tangherlini and Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today that the Metropolitan Police Department has established the second Neighborhood Safety Zone (NSZ) in the Trinidad Area.
The NSZ have been established as a result of seven people shot in five separate incidents resulting in the death of 13-year-old Alonso Robinson in the 1500 block of Holbrook Street, NE in the early morning hours of Saturday July 19, 2008.
“”We had another violent night in the Trinidad neighborhood. Over the course of last night, we had a group of brazen individuals that once again entered the Trinidad neighborhood in a vehicle and repeatedly approached groups of people on the street, robbing and shooting them,” said Chief Lanier.
Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch are investigating, and are on the lookout for a 2002 gold Dodge Intrepid bearing Maryland paper temporary tags. The car was last seen in the Trinidad area, and is believed to have been used in the multiple violent crimes in the Trinidad area:
· At approximately 1:07 a.m., in the 1200 block of 16th Street, NE, an adult male and a13-year-old male were victims of a shooting. The adult male was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body and the 13-year-old male was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. Both complainants were admitted to an area local hospital.
· At approximately 1:50 a.m., at the intersection of Trinidad Avenue and Mount Olivet Road, NE, an adult male was suffering from an apparent stab wound to the neck. He was taken to an area local hospital and admitted in critical condition.
· At approximately 2:25 a.m., in the 1400 block of Staples Street, NE, an adult male was suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He was taken to an area local hospital and admitted in critical condition.
· At approximately 2:27 a.m., in the 1100 block of Holbrook Street, NE, an adult male was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to an area local hospital for treatment.
· At approximately 2:30 a.m., in the 1500 block of Holbrook Street, NE, 13-year-old Alonzo Robinson, of an unknown address, was the victim of homicide. He was transported to an area local hospital and pronounced dead. Two other victims sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted to an area local hospital.
The NSZ will be in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until 7 p.m. on July 24, 2008. Checkpoints will be placed at the intersection of Mt. Olivet Road, NE and Bladensburg Road, NE southbound, to the intersection of Florida Avenue, NE, proceeding westward on Florida Avenue, NE to the intersection of Trinidad Avenue, NE and then north on Trinidad Avenue, NE to the intersection of Mt. Olivet Road, NE, then east to Bladensburg Road, NE.
The primary purpose of the NSZ program, with its checkpoints, its brochure, its signage, and its attendant publicity is to discourage persons inclined toward committing acts of violence by using a motor vehicle to enter the Trinidad neighborhood. The goal is to “fence them out.”
Anyone who has information regarding the cases is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME. Anonymous information can also be sent to the department’s text tip line by text messaging 50-411.
The Metropolitan Police Department is currently offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
----------------------------------
Unconfirmed, but the story I'm now hearing about the 13 year old boy [Alonso Robinson] is that he was in town from Alabama with his mother visiting family. They had just emerged from the vehicle and were heading for the house when shots were fired. Alonso was fatally struck, and his mother was shot in the hand. NBC4 is reporting that the teen was in town to visit his grandfather.

Return of the Checkpoint
I'm assuming this will just be a safety checkpoint, and not like the headline grabbing checkpoints [who can say], but police are, as I type, setting up a checkpoint at Oates and Holbrook. This is roughly a block, or less, from where a male was shot last night.
Shootings Last Night
The following email was sent out about half an hour ago. No further details are available at this time-

At approximately 0130 a gold 4dr vehicle pulled into the 1300 block of holbrook street. Three black males got out of the car and attempted to rob several subjects at that location, they then shot one male subject.
At 0140 the same vehicle and suspects shot three subjects in the 1500 block of holbrook (killing one 13yr old male at that location)
A brief chase of the gold vehicle ensued however the car made good its escape. We have recovered another vehicle at this time that may have been involved

The police are reporting one fatality in Trinidad.
NBC4 reports on the seven shootings that took place in Trinidad last night.
At least five of the shootings are linked. Victims were shot after attempted robberies that police have speculated might be linked to gang initiations involving recently paroled offenders returning from distant incarceration. Here is a map showing the shooting locations.
I spoke with another officer and it looks like the gang initiation thing is just a rumor circulating among officers. I think police are still figuring things out. Police don't seem to be stopping anyone right now, but there are lots of cops from all different districts and they currently have some streets blocked off.

NY Times: Public Toilets
The New York Times ran a piece today that reminded me of the idea that was floated a couple of years ago to install a public toilet on H Street. The article talks about the varying experiences in different cities. I think the main concern on H was always maintenance, followed by safety. A couple of weeks ago I was walking east on the south side of the 1300 block of H. We watched a man park his car, get out, and start peeing on a church. It was a nice car. He was a decently dressed middle aged black guy. Why he decided it would be okay to pee on the church I can't fathom. Would a public restroom prevent something like this, I doubt it. He could have ducked into SOVA, or the Popeye's to use the restroom. But I will say that a while back when Pepco was doing a lot of street work and left its porta-potties unlocked, I did see random people, either walking or driving down the street, stop to use the bathrooms.

ANC5B Special Meeting
When: 6:30pm Tuesday July 22nd
Where: Joe Cole Rec 1200 Morse Street
What: a special meeting to discuss and vote on approval of the the Gateway Market Residences. The Gateway Market Residences is a mixed use [residential, retail, office] PUD [Planned Unit Development] proposed for the lot located at 4th and Florida NE [catty corner to Two Rivers Charter School]. The developer intends to construct a ten story building with residences on the upper five floors. The development is part of the larger [23 acre] New Town plan put forth by the same developer. I would urge people to attend this meeting because this is a very important development project, and I think we need to make sure we get it right. On Thursday July 24th this matter will return to the Zoning Commission for approval or modification, so this is really a last chance to have a voice in the matter.
For reference I'm reposting my recap of the June 6th Zoning hearing on this matter [as well as some links to past coverage]--
Last Night's Zoning Hearing -A Briefing
June 6, 2008
This hearing was regarding the Gateway Market Residences a proposed PUD at 4th and Florida.
ANC 6C representatives submitted a filing and were present at the meeting [Phelps and Velasco, both in opposition]. Single Member District representatives Bernard and Lawson [both in opposition] were present from 5B. ANC 5B Chairman Shelton [proponent] was scheduled to appear, but was a no-show. The hearing began at 6:30pm and the ANC 5B meeting began at 7:30pm, so there was a scheduling conflict between the two meetings.
Mr. Choi and his representatives were present, as were some spectators. A representative from Harry Thomas' office delivered testimony in favor of the development, and I believe it also contained opposition to granting party status to ANC 6C. No representative was present, due to scheduling conflicts, from Tommy Wells' office, but his office did submit a letter supporting party status for ANC 6C.
The Zoning Commission granted party status for ANC 6C, but refused to grant them great weight without some additions to their filing. They intend to make such additions to obtain great weight.
The Chairman of ANC 5B had submitted a letter of support purporting to speak for the entire ANC, but it was not taken as the official stance of ANC 5B because it was deficient on several grounds, including that it made on mention of a binding vote by the ANC. This is because there was no vote on the issue at the May 1st meeting when applicant last appeared before the Commission. The last time ANC 5B voted on this development was more than two and half years ago. A copy of the letter issued following that vote was attached. The Zoning Commission declined to accept that vote as the official stance of ANC 5B because of its age and the tremendously changed circumstances surrounding the project during that time period. The Commission also stated that the filings in opposition from two commissioners indicated that there was some division in ANC 5B on this project.
The Commission granted a continuance until July 24th. Essentially this means that the Applicant was able to present the plans, and the Commission gave them comments on the presentation. The Commission asked that ANC 5B hold a special meeting with a binding vote prior to the July 24th hearing, and that all representatives, and any other individuals, or groups wishing to testify in this matter appear at the July 24th hearing. The Commission urged both ANCs to speak with the developer's agents to resolve issues before that date to the extent possible. I would urge any interested persons to attend any and all public meetings on this issue prior to the July hearing date.
One of the issues drawing the most interest was that Applicant's plans call for retail to face inward, rather than towards the street. Considering that Applicant's plans also call for windows on most sides of the project this brought up concerns that this would result in the street facing windows being filled with stock rooms.

Studio 400 Update
From the ANC 6C05 website/blog (http://anc6c05.blogspot.com/):
Please be advised that on Friday, July 11, 2008, MPD and DCRA issued a cease and desist order to the operators of Studio 400. I have spoken with the primary operator since the issuance of the order. In addition, it appears that there is some internal conflict between the operators concerning their business strategy. I am working with the respective agency officials in order to update you soon on the future of Studio 400. There are issues being worked through that I am not at liberty to say at this juncture. However, at the appropriate time I will inform the community.

Please see the following announcement. Theater Alliance is the resident company at the H Street Playhouse. The company has been the recipient of numerous awards, and they offer free tickets to the neighborhood. Please consider supporting them. A neighborhood partner of this quality is rare in any area.-

In addition to the Challenge, the UPSTART GRANT gives $70,000 toward consultants in Development, Marketing, Governance and Technology. Theater Alliance is the only theater to be given this grant. More on Car Crash in the 1000 Block of H
Here's a Fox News story identifying the accident as occurring at 1019 H Street. I think more than one building was hit. According to the Fox story, at least five people were injured, including a woman and her two children who were walking on the sidewalk when the car jumped the curb. Here's a later version of the Fox story. The Post also covered the incident, but they place the number injured at 4.

The Soccer Players Four
Spike Mendelsohn on H?
Alert reader Dave sent in this transcript from a Washingtonian interview with Top Chef contender Spike Mendelsohn. In the interview Mendelsohn discusses his upcoming projects in DC, and says he has something coming on H Street. It isn't clear whether he refers to H Street NE, or one of the other quadrants, but I thought it merited a mention.
New Thai Restaurant Coming to West End of H
I wasn't in attendance, but I'm told a new Thai restaurant, which I believe seeks to open in the red building at 507 H Street, was an agenda topic [ABC license]. As you know, the west end is deeply in need of more nighttime businesses [Pap and Petey's can't be the only one], so this news was very exciting. Other big topics at the meeting-

Chef Teddy Bests Bobby Flay
If you missed the Food Network's Throwndown that aired last night you might not know that Dr. Graniville's own Chef Teddy Folkman won. A big congrats to Folkman for taking the prize. Check out Dr. Granville Moore's any night of the week [but expect a wait during peak hours] for the best mussels in town. I also adore the bison burger. I order it rare, and it is the best burger I've ever had. Dr. Granville's is located at 1238 H Street.

Comments Experiment Over
The Open ID experiment is over. It was always intended to be temporary. I hope that people understood the point, and will be respectful. I am asking, because it's annoying to me, as well as to others, not only to have rude and hostile comments with little substantive value [and sometimes none], but also to have to look at an entire thread with many commentors posting as anonymous and not leaving a tag because you can't tell who is posting more than once, or replying to what. Go ahead and post as anonymous, but please leave a tag [e.g. big blue fish] in the header/body of your post. If we continue to have a severe problem with trolls, I will go with Open ID permanently. But I do prefer to make it easy for people to comment without having to really login to anything. I want us all to behave like adults. So have fun, but be respectful.
For those interested, response both here, and elsewhere [including offline] was mixed, but mostly supportive for the Open ID thing. Personally, I hate that kind of stuff and would only move to it as a last resort. I just wanted to give people pause. For the few people that raised censorship related issues [no one raised it head on], I don't advocate censorship, but this effort wasn't about censorship, just about making people consider how much they really wanted to post that crazy rant. In all my time running this blog I think I've deleted 4 comments since late 2004 [one was defamatory, and three were racist/homophobic with no redeeming value at all] that weren't just spam/duplicates. I don't know how many comments Frozen Tropics has received, but this is WAY less than 1 percent of the total. I believe in the free flow of information. I just hope people will think before they post.

“Against the Grain” Showcases D. C.-Area Tap Company
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Tappening presents an evening of rhythm tap dance, “Against the Grain,” at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 8:00pm and Sunday, July 20, 2008 at 4:00pm. The eight-year old tap company’s full-length concert features seven works choreographed by Tappening director Heidi Schultz, and guest artists from Philadelphia, Michigan, and D. C.
“Traditionally tap is done to jazz music, but you can tap to any type of music, anything with a beat—you don’t even need music since our feet are our instruments,” says Schultz. “Different kinds of music lead me to different kinds of rhythms and steps. Exploring a wide range of music helps my work stay fresh and distinct.”
Schultz’s choreography combines intricate footwork with modern, jazz, and club-style movements, emphasizing the whole body. “Tap isn’t just from the waist down,” she says. Tappening’s style integrates several types of rhythm tap that celebrate the jazz, funk, rock, reggae, and electronic beats found in its eclectic selection of music that ranges from the Clash to German techno.
Tappening opens the evening with the first of seven pieces choreographed by Heidi Schultz in which the dancers use their feet to add a drum line to Speech’s cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” The tempo and energy level are cranked to high for “Sole Score” and “Are You Talking To Me?” featuring music mixed by the D. C.-based DJ collective Fort Knox Five. The rhythms then flow from a soul version of the Woody Guthrie classic “This Land Is Your Land” to a mash-up of a Herman’s Hermits cover and German techno in “Sumthin’ Good” to violin and piano over down tempo electronica in “Sweet Sadness.” The concert closes with a punk tap medley to songs of the Clash.
The guest artists featured in “Against the Grain” highlight both traditional and future directions in tap. Tap Team Two & Co. from Philadelphia brings the beat with a fierce a capella piece while Quynn Johnson and Alyse Jones, transplants from Flint, Michigan, look back to the roots of tap in African music and dance. At-large Tappening member Lauren Squires pushes the frontiers of tap dance with a piece she describes as “loosely guided noise.”
***********************************************************************
Under the direction of Heidi Schultz, Tappening has been a part of the professional D.C. tap scene since 2000. Currently with three core and several at-large members, the group has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the University Arts Bank in Philadelphia, Lisner Auditorium, Carter Barron, Dance Place, USDA, American University, and the Jack Guidone Theater.
Heidi Schultz began teaching tap more than 20 years ago in Detroit, Michigan and currently teaches at Joy of Motion. Ms. Schultz is the founder, director, and choreographer of the D.C.-based rhythm tap company Tappening. In 2004, she was nominated for a Metro D.C. Dance Award for “outstanding individual performance” for her work in Tappening’s show, “Beautiful Noise.” With a master’s degree in anthropology, Schultz works as a research editor at National Geographic magazine.

Open ID test run
I'm doing an Open id test run. For most of you non-bloggers this might require [I think] getting a Google account. My hope is that this will cut down on trolling. You can get a Google account and still be totally anonymous here. Give it a shot. Read more about Open ID here. It isn't a nasty tracking type thing, and NOBODY here will know who you are. Please email me at inked78[at]hotmail.com if you have ANY issues with this system and I will switch to Google logins. Happy 4th of July.

UPDATE
===============================
Not only will any Yahoo ID work as an Open ID, but here is a list of other Open ID providers, including at least one that allows you to set up a completely anonymous account with no verification.

The Red and the Black is Open Tonight
The Red and the Black had to close a bit early last night, so they wanted to let everyone know they will be open. Here's the message-
Yesterday we had to shut down early because of a small electrical issue. I want your readers to know that we will be open today (as usual) and hope to see everyone at the Red and the Black.
Also, we are expecting a great show tonight at the Rock & Roll Hotel. The Black Angels are playing.
Soccer Tonight @6:30 Sherwood Rec
An update on the soccer meet-up at the rec center at 10th and G-
It looks like we have a good number of people interested in coming out tonight, which is great. I hope this turns into a regular event and more people come out as word spreads. My hope is to do this every Wednesday night during the Summer. As time goes on, hopefully the group will grow even larger. I think there are others interested (including some of the neighborhood kids), but they want to see that other people are actually out there first. Tonight can be a good start, even if we just wind up kicking the ball around.
Please feel free to bring friends and neighbors. All skill levels are welcome.
I look forward to meeting all of you. If not tonight, some other time.
